Interviewed by WedSB.com

wedSB logoI had the pleasure of being interviewed by Julie Skon of WedSB.com, an up-and-coming wedding directory for the Santa Barbara area. She asked me some good questions and I loved giving my candid answers… but did you expect anything less?? Enjoy… and be sure to check out their vendor directory too!

wedSB: Please tell us about yourself, your background, and how you began Amazing Days Events.

Sophie Spier: I have loved weddings and parties since I was a little girl. I have a photo of me, about 5 years old, with a white curtain on my head holding a fake flower bouquet – I was playing “dress up”. When I was a pre-teen and teenager, the only section of the newspaper that I would read was the Wedding Announcements section. However, it isn’t my personality to design and be artsy so I took a path of project management. Two business degrees, 5 careers, and 20+ years later, I made my way back around to the thing that I love and feel that I was meant to do – wedding coordination. After planning my own wedding in 2008 – which is still one of my favorite weddings ever– I realized that there was a market out there for brides who were smart, resourceful and creative who needed just a little help on the planning side of things – to nail down a realistic timeline, ensure that vendors were all on the same page, and that nothing slipped through the cracks. They also needed someone who is professional, reliable & cool under pressure on the Big Day to keep things flowing, guests happy, and the bride & groom stress-free. What a perfect fit for me and my skill set! So Amazing Days Events was born!

wedSB: What do you love about what you do?

Sophie Spier: I love that I am making sure that the Bride and Groom have as close to a magical and once-in-a-lifetime experience as possible. That the day is smooth, stress-free, and as close to perfect as humanly possible.

wedSB: Describe your wedding planning service in three words.

Sophie Spier: Professional, calm, and organized.

wedSB: Are there any weddings that stand out in your mind?

Sophie Spier: One of my favorite weddings was at the Four Seasons Biltmore and the Bride & Groom really had FUN with their plans. They had a live band, an ice cream sundae bar, a photobooth and a Napoleon Dynamite theme. They were a playful couple and that really showed in the fun features – they even gave away chapstick as the wedding favor (I still use mine today!). Another wedding that stands out for me was one at Gainey Vineyard in Santa Ynez. The Groom’s family made homemade jam as the wedding favor which doubled as an escort card! Plus they had one of the best live bands that I have EVER worked with – I couldn’t stop dancing (ok, it was really just bopping along at the back of the courtyard but still…)!! A recent ceremony that I did at Canary in downtown Santa Barbara combined the Bride & Groom’s Christian faith & the Groom’s Nigerian culture by having both a pastor – who performed the religious ceremony – and the Groom’s father – who performed a cultural ceremony that involved guest blessings, the families, and earthen elements. VERY cool.

wedSB: Do you have any favorite Santa Barbara Venues?

Sophie Spier: I love a lot of Santa Barbara venues for various reasons. I’ve had so many different brides with different values with different visions and they’ve chosen a venue that works for them and is perfect. It’s hard for me to pick just one – it’s like ice cream flavors… sometimes I feel like mint chip and sometimes I feel like blueberry cheesecake!
